The most popular dog breeds in Indian homes are the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Beagle, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Poodle, Maltese, Pug, French Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel, Doberman, Rottweiler, Siberian Husky and Samoyed. The right breed for you depends on three things: how much space you have, how much time you can give to exercise and grooming, and how hot your city gets.
Every week, families tell us they chose a breed from a photo and then struggled with shedding, barking or summer care. We list more than 30 breeds on GoodFurs, and we would rather you pick the right one than the most popular one. This guide compares the breeds Indian families ask about most.

Best Family Dog Breeds in India
Labrador Retriever: India’s favourite family dog. Labs are friendly, patient with children and easy to train, which makes them ideal for first-time owners. They shed and gain weight easily, so plan daily walks and measured meals. See our Labrador breed guide.
Golden Retriever: Gentle, loving and wonderful with kids. Goldens shed heavily twice a year and need brushing a few times a week. Keep summer walks to early morning and evening. Read our Golden Retriever breed guide.
Beagle: Cheerful, sturdy and great with children, but full of energy. A bored Beagle howls, so it suits families who can give it an hour of activity every day.
Cocker Spaniel: Sweet-natured and affectionate. Its long ears need weekly cleaning to prevent infections, and its silky coat needs grooming every few weeks.
Best Small Dog Breeds for Flats
Shih Tzu: Calm, affectionate and happy with short walks. It sheds very little but needs daily brushing, and a cool room in summer. See our Shih Tzu breed guide.
Poodle: One of the smartest breeds and among the lowest-shedding, which suits homes where dog hair is a concern. It needs professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Explore the Poodle breed guide.
Maltese: A gentle, quiet companion with a silky white coat. It bonds closely with its family and is delicate, so it suits homes with older children or adults.
Pomeranian: Tiny, bold and alert. Poms can be barky, so start training early, and never fully shave their double coat. It protects them from both heat and sunburn.
Pug and French Bulldog: Both are calm, funny and well suited to flats. Their short noses make Indian summers dangerous, so AC in peak heat is essential.

Best Guard Dog Breeds in India
German Shepherd: Intelligent, loyal and highly trainable. It is one of India’s most trusted guard and family dogs, and it needs daily mental and physical work. See our German Shepherd breed guide.
Doberman: Alert, athletic and devoted to its family. Its short coat makes it one of the best large breeds for hot Indian cities.
Rottweiler: Powerful and protective, but loving at home. Rottweilers need early socialisation and firm, consistent training, so they suit experienced owners best.
Snow Breeds: Love Them, but Plan Carefully
Siberian Husky and Samoyed: Both are beautiful, friendly and among the most requested breeds on GoodFurs. Both were bred for snow. In most Indian cities they need AC for much of the year, heavy daily exercise and regular coat care. Never shave their coats. If you live in a hot city and can’t commit to air conditioning, choose a short-coated breed instead.
The same planning applies to giant breeds like the Saint Bernard, Newfoundland and Mastiff, and to thick-coated breeds like the Chow Chow and Akita.

What About Native Indian Breeds?
India’s own dogs, such as the Indie (Indian Pariah Dog), Rajapalayam, Mudhol Hound, Kombai and Chippiparai, are hardy, heat-adapted and need little grooming. The Indie is one of the healthiest and easiest dogs you can own, and adopting one from a local shelter is a great choice. The native hunting breeds are independent working dogs, so they suit experienced owners with space.

Buy Safely: What to Check
Whatever breed you choose, make sure the puppy is at least 8 weeks old, as required by the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017. Ask for vaccination and deworming records and a vet health certificate. If the puppy is sold as KCI registered, ask to see the papers. Every GoodFurs listing shows age, vaccination status and KCI status, and every puppy comes with 3 months of free vet assistance. Read how buying on GoodFurs works before you book.
