Pet dog registration in India is done by your city’s municipal body, not by the central government. Most big cities, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai and Jaipur, now require it. You usually register online with your dog’s anti-rabies vaccination certificate, a photo of the dog and your address proof, and pay a fee of ₹50 to ₹2,000 depending on the city.

Is Dog Registration Compulsory in India?

There is no single national dog licence. Each municipal corporation sets its own rules under its state’s municipal act, so the requirement, fee and process change from city to city. In most metros, registration is now compulsory, and an unregistered dog can attract a fine or even be seized.

Registration helps you in three practical ways:

• Proof of ownership if your dog is lost, stolen or picked up by civic staff

Delhi NCR in Brief

Delhi has the clearest online system. You sign up with an Aadhaar-linked mobile number, upload the rabies certificate in MCD’s format and pay online. Chennai is the strictest city right now: a microchip is part of the licence, and inspectors check door to door. Step-by-Step: How to Register Your Dog Online

1. Get the anti-rabies shot and ask your vet for a certificate in your city’s format.
2. Open your city’s portal or app and sign up with your mobile number.
3. Fill in your details and your dog’s details: breed, age, sex, colour and vaccination date.
4. Upload the documents as PDFs or images within the size limit.
5. Pay the fee online and save the receipt.
6. Download the licence once approved, and put the token on your dog’s collar if your city issues one.

Renewal and Penalties

Most cities require annual renewal, usually tied to your dog’s yearly rabies booster. In Delhi, the late fee is ₹100 for each month of delay. Fines for not registering go up to ₹5,000 in Chennai and Jaipur. Noida fines owners ₹10,000 if their pet attacks someone. Keep your vaccination card up to date, because every renewal asks for it.
